Because Everyone Loves Pockets

Honestly, I think people tend to take pockets for granted. But let me tell you if I am in a pocketless outfit my whole day is a mess!

So I knew one of the things I wanted to learn how to do was sew pockets.

In my first year of University, I did a practicum in a classroom that had nifty little pockets that hung on the backs of the student’s chairs to hold their books and such. I decided I would learn how to make those in case I want them in a future classroom.

I found this tutorial. It claimed it was easy as two folds and three sewed lines. They kinda lied. I couldn’t figure out how to fold it properly based on the instructions, so it took a lot of trial and error before I was able to make something that works.

In the end, I have something that works. It ended up big too big for my chair so I had to pin the corners (which is something I wouldn’t have been able to do a few weeks ago.) I also think I would use different fabric if I was to do this in a class. This fabric is just an old sheet which made it economical but I think the pattern could be distracting.

Either then that, depending on the needs of the class, this may be something I will create for my future classroom.

Is this something you could see being useful? How would you change the pattern to make it more useful?

I think that this is a great idea. I have been in many classrooms that feature students’ belongings on the floor because of a lack of space for then nearby. I love pockets on their chairs and think that it is very useful in keeping the room tidy and allowing students to keep what they need near them safe.

    Hi Shyla,
I also love pockets and think that it was a fabulous idea to make something that you may choose to have in your future classrooms as one of your sewing projects! I am unable to play your videos attached in this post and I’m not sure if my computer is just slow this morning or if maybe you have your personal video posted as private. It is important to upload your videos as unlisted in order for your readers to be able to watch them. Let me know if you need some help figuring this out.
